Negros Island in 2000
After arriving in the Philippines in November we rented an air conditioned van and headed south from Cebu City. It was a three hour trip on roads that were not made for vans but more like motorcycles. They were very ruff with huge potholes but we trekked on. At the end of the road was a boat launch where there was a ferry waiting for us to take us across the straight to Negros Island, Philippines. The ferry took about an hour and half to reach the port city of Dumaguete.
After spending all day traveling from Cebu to Dumaguete we got a hotel and got some rest before another long bus ride. The next morning we boarded a bus made for small people and headed up to the mountains to minister at Faith Tabernacle Church in the town of Pamplona, Negros. The entire bus ride took us about three hours and we reached the church around 10 AM.
We were welcomed in the church by the pastor and his wife as well as his entire congregation. We were officially welcomed by the Barrio Captain as well as the Mayor of the city. We began the service which was your typical Sunday morning service with one very miraculous difference. At the end of the service we asked for those who needed prayer to come forward and we would lay hands on them and intercede on their behalf. As we were praying for people, Lorraine came to me and said that I needed to pray for this little boy that she was with. I looked down at this very small boy who was about six years old and very small for his age. I looked at him and my heart went out to him. He had a very large tumor on his face that started at his forehead and run down his face, spreading his nose across his face.
I knelt down so that I would be at his level and reached out my hand and lay my hands upon him. The moment I touched him I felt the power of God as did the little boy. It was almost instantaneously that the little boy just collapsed as the Spirit of God came on him. People around were in shock that I would first of all reach out and touch the little boy but also that I would continue to pray even after God touched him. Soon I told the pastor that the little boy was going to be healed. The pastor told me that the doctors had only given him about a month to live because the tumor was growing extremely fast. I told him that it may be but that I trusted God.
Though we did not see immediate results in the little boy I somehow knew that God was going to do what He had promised He was going to do. It was not until a few years later that I knew that the boy was touched. I was one of the speakers at a National Churches Convention in Cebu, Philippines when a man came to me and said that I probably did not remember who he was to which I replied that I did not. He began to tell me that he was the father of that little boy I had prayed for six years earlier. He told me that his son was now twelve years old and doing very well. He said that you can still see where the tumor was but that his nose was back to normal. He thanked me to which I told him, "you need to thank God; I did nothing more than what I heard Him telling me."
It is awesome that the father of this little boy remembered me and that the little boy was healed by the hand of God. We never know at the time whether they were healed then or later but when someone comes and tells you, your heart is touched knowing that God definitely heard your prayer and it was answered. Sometimes we just need that bit of encouragement to help increase what God has already put inside of us.
